"Night of the Living Dead"
In our time, it is almost impossible to find people among movie lovers who would not have heard of the cult horror film of George Romero "Night of the Living Dead". It was with this film that the fashion for the creation of motion pictures about soulless and cruel, animated dead people, devoured every man who met on his way, began. Having created several successful sequels (according to many even surpassing the original) and the prequel (failed at the box office, but found respect among the loyal fans of the director), Romero once and for all won first place in the genre of zombie horror.
Linking the zombies (although the film did not sound this word) with the surrounding reality, including political and social conflicts, Romero expressed his point of view on this issue. It is difficult not to agree that this was a rather original move, especially a pessimistic ending, again supporting the view that people are more terrible and dangerous than dead people who are alive (a similar proposition can be found in the sequel of the film).
Of course, after so much time, the film no longer frightens and does not shake as much as it probably made an impression on the viewer at that time. Now, looking through modern films in this genre, you still understand, from where they drew inspiration, even intricate director's finds can not hide this fact. Anyway, what is the phenomenon of "Night of the Living Dead"? Really in that terrible and desperate atmosphere of fear and horror, in which there were spectators along with the main characters throughout the film? And maybe in the presence of several rather unpleasant, but bold for that time scenes? Or a completely new idea for that period? Pessimism Romero still made a proper impression on the viewer, making it clear that in similar situations, salvation simply can not be. At that time, happy end was firmly established in American cinema, many directors did not believe that a "bad end" could cause sympathy for the viewer and bring success to the creators. "Night of the Living Dead" showed the opposite.
Today, "Night of the Living Dead" can be found in two versions - black and white and color. No matter how unusual it may be, they look different. Particularly interesting in this respect is another solution: in black and white version - as one of the first films in such a plot and ending in particular, in color - as the beginning of a new "zombie era" (further continuations are removed in color). Do not forget that a significant contribution to the cinema Romero has made starting with this movie.
