The progenitor of modern films about zombies
"Night of the Living Dead" is a film that can be called the progenitor of modern films about zombies. Of course this is not the first picture about living dead, but it has several significant differences from the films shot on the same subject in an earlier period.
The first difference is that the zombie of this film does not have a manager, for example, the sorcerer Voodoo, as in the pictures "White zombies" and "Plague of zombies".
The second, in my opinion, the most significant difference is that zombies are able to infect ordinary people (through a bite) and they in turn also become part of an endless horde of living dead.
The film has not a bad plot, although fans of modern zombie genre picture may seem boring. Here we will not see giant megacities flooded with millions of living corpses, and the government army struggling desperately with them. There are no big and terrible mutants in the movie and super heroes saving the world and possessing super abilities. The film tells about a group of survivors hiding in a lone farmhouse from the nightmare of what is happening around. Perhaps the picture does not have enough dynamics, but it does create a good atmosphere. And it is often not enough for modern films.
If previous films about zombies only opened the door for this genre, then "Night of the Living Dead" opened it open. In the future, there will be many more films on this subject, both successful and failed. But the first film that opened the way to them will be "Night of the Living Dead". And look it worth at least to get acquainted with the roots of the genre and the history of cinema in general.
