Well what can I say? In a word - Alas and AH !!!
My acquaintance with Jane Austen began with a reading of the novel, then followed the BBC series, and finally, the 2005 film.
I can not say that I was greatly impressed - I was expecting something similar from the modern film version. But still I wanted to hope for the best. Alas…
But still, I'll start with the pros.
Landscape. Music. Lydia
We must pay tribute to the operator and the composer, I can evaluate their work by 10 points. As for Lydia, Jena Malone, in my opinion, was perfect for this role. Pretty, stupid, tactless, young - just that I saw her.
Next come solid minuses.
Darcy and Lizzy.
This is something dreadful. Suffering from anorexia, Cyrus Knightley is not at all like a country girl bursting with health. It may be the beauty standard of the 21st century, but by no means the end of the 18th - the beginning of the 19th centuries. And besides, it’s too immediate and impulsive, which sometimes turns into an elementary lack of manners and rudeness. The fact that Lizzy - the smartest of the sisters, I also did not see.
Darcy claims fewer, but Matthew McFadein is truly sorry. In vain he got involved in this business. I think it’s just impossible to beat Colin Firth. And he, poor fellow, walks the whole film some kind of lost, and his isolation is more like a set of complexes.
Wickham and Collins
Wickham is too handsome and not perceived as a negative character. The same can be said about Collins. I remember when I read a book, it creaked my teeth, and in the 1995 series I couldn’t look at it at all. And here is such a very nice little man.
Bennet House
Here I was really shocked. According to the book, Bennets are not rich, but not so much! It was even mentioned that the girls have a small dowry. And suddenly a dress of burlap, shabby walls, a dirty yard, pigs running around. Brute obviously!
Book matching
The plot shamelessly hastily, left only the main points, a lot of gag - as a result, the very spirit of the work disappeared.
Cast
Very weak. True, Jane is nice to watch - really pretty, unlike serial. Before the tears, it was painful to look at Donald Sutherland and Judi Dench. Great actors, but the roles are unsuccessful. Where is the mind, irony, subtle humor of Mr. Bennett? Judi Dench really causes fear, but only with her disheveled hairdo, which looks like a witch.
Total
It is sad that once again the magnificent literary work fell into the hands of people who think exclusively about the box office. The film can only be viewed as an average historical-romantic melodrama, and only those who have not read the book.
