Unusual
Director Dennis Ganzel, who shot the notorious Napoleon and a very strong sequel to the Experiment, is gradually ranked among the most interesting German directors of this time. Every time you expect from him something new, unusual, imagining what he will surprise this time. And so he took up the very vampire theme beaten up in our time. In recent years, directors have managed to make vampire films so sweet that the molasses literally flows from each such work (the only exception is the True Blood series).
Dennis Ganzel from the first minutes of the film makes it clear that it will not be sweet. It will be painful and bloody.
The plot, in principle, is quite simple. The girl-tatsanka (Lena), with problems in the family and in life, meets with a high-ranking female vampire (Louise), who sees in her something that others do not see. Louise turns a girl into a vampire, showing her a new world. The world where you can take whatever you want. A world without limits, without norms, where you live for your own pleasure. The only problem is that there is no place for love (like pity) in this world.
The viewer may ask what is unusual in this film? Unusual presentation of the director of his ideas. We have already lost the habit of such vampires .. Glamorous, merciless, cynical, who do not cry the whole movie, tormented by the torments of unrequited love, who amuse themselves by killing a whole small plane of people ..
The last time such vampires were shown to us in an interview with a vampire, and after that, a steady rolling on an inclined one went.
Characters are very pleased. They are memorable, easily distinguishable and vivid .. Here is the full human psychological spectrum: Lena is a former kid, closed and unsociable; Louise is a glamorous, selfish bitch waiting for worship; Charlotte is a depressed diva with the darkest gut; Nora is a party girl, a “lighter” girl, a child in the shower. Max Rimelt looks very nice in the role of a policeman Tom. Young, a little naive, with his ideals and pure feelings for Lena.
Love in this film is shown in different perspectives, everyone wants his own love. Louise wants to be loved, representing the most selfish type of personality. Nora is looking for her Romeo, realizing that she will never find him. Charlotte can only remember the love of her husband and daughter. Lena, in my opinion, still plainly did not have time to understand what love is, feeling an incomprehensible craving for Tom. It is very pleasing that the director does not show love in every frame, does not seek to impose something on the viewer, he gives hints, and the viewer must understand everything himself.
The film is very dynamic and does not let the viewer get bored. The special effects are quite at the level (except, of course, the combustion in the sun - here the bobble came out). Boevka looks cool, as well as scenes of violence. There are some very strong scenes that stand out from the general canvas of the piece.
The director and his team managed to surprise, forced to remember what vampires should be, for which many thanks to them.
