Tale of man and mankind ..
After watching the film really leaves a lasting impression and a desire to immerse yourself in it again. It seems to be a black-and-white documentary with often flashing “hardened reality” (here I mean a photo), which is unlikely, as it initially seems, to hold the attention of a simple inhabitant ... But, despite all this, the viewer never for a second falls out of the narrative.
The film is partly biographical, but since it is a work of art, it looks not just as an interview with the main characters, but as something more.
I just want to say a few words about the title, since the meaning of the film lies in it. The salt of the earth is the human race in a collective sense, respectively, this film is not only about one person, but about the whole of humanity. And then the Gospel of Matthew, an excerpt from the Sermon on the Mount of Jesus, comes to mind:
“You are the salt of the earth. If the salt loses its strength, then how do you make it salty? She is no good anymore, how can she be thrown out at people being trampled upon. ”
It is just an allegory that humanity has gradually lost its humanity. And the film just pushes on thoughts about how to return the humanity to humanity, that is, how to return its saltiness as salt.
The film begins with frames of greed. Although initially it is not at all clear what we are shown. But then we see slaves-miners, and immediately comes to mind an association with greed, with profit. Now, when a person becomes a person, he becomes, as a rule, an individualist. Before, the mind of a person was still more collective. And now, when thoughts of personal enrichment come to the individualist, they are likely to eventually lead to greed. And this is exactly what takes humanity from a person.
The film very well shows the conflict between man and nature, where man is represented as the brainchild of civilization. And no matter how bitterly aware, identifying the film with us, we rather belong to the civilized world. And it is bitter because the man of civilization builds "progress", going against nature. It is well displayed in a scary section with fire and oil wells. when a person goes against nature, then nature can then go against a person.
Also in the film presented the conflict between man and humanity. The terrible scenes of death make us think that these are the fruits of the acts of our brothers - the same people. At the beginning of the story, we were shown a portrait of a blind woman, whose gaze really takes on a soul. Then we see a lot of photos of completely emaciated and exhausted people, who are still alive now, but will die in a day, two, a week. And then we see a multikilometer road, just littered with corpses. And all this is the brainchild of the authorities who provoke conflicts between hungry people, delaying aid and provisions, and they themselves are cashing in on it.
The film is very well structured: it clearly distinguishes the boundaries of sections. Wim Wenders with Sebastian Salgada and we, together with them, start flipping through an album of memories. Slides from different stories, periods of the photographer's life, rush in front of us. And all this narrative combines almost uninterrupted music and the heartfelt voice of the narrator. These elements carry a large emotional load. The voices of Wim Wenders and Sebastian Salgada are given to us by some one can even say awe. And in this case, the combination of voice-over, emotional music and strict black and white images give a sense of continuity and keep the viewer's attention.
