Different perceptions
I revised this film with a break of 13 years. Of course, such a touching story of the struggle between "good" and "evil" firmly sat down in the memory of a seven-year-old child in the form of delight and a basin of tears. I roared when the first son was killed, I roared when the church was burned, when the second son was killed, in general, when everyone roared. In this regard, even “Hachiko” and “Titanic” seem empty and callous to emotions, comedies.
Revising at 19, my opinion about the film changed dramatically: the enthusiasm was replaced by a bunch of questions addressed both to Mel Gibson and Roland Emmerich.
So it turned out that history as a sphere of scientific knowledge became, over time, not an empty word for me, and I began to understand very well where there is something. And what was done / removed for what. I still think “The Patriot” is a good film, sometimes brilliant, but now I know the purpose for which it was filmed: this is a 100 percent propaganda film. The British are shown in this film from such a side as if they were fighting not against people, but against bloodthirsty newcomers. The film does not show any bad actions from the so-called "patriots". But is it worth reminding everyone who William Sherman is and how he led the war ...
This is all clear that the Americans will always try to hide the other side of their medals just as our Soviet government hid the atrocities of the Red Army in East Prussia to the last. This is normal. But then, on condition of this, the film becomes already some kind of parody and to the end it seems to you that you are being deceived, and it is hard and sometimes quite cynical.
Playing actors in this film has always amazed me. Heath Ledger and Mel Gibson played at their level, although the latter sometimes did not play out and it seemed to me that I was looking at Kristen Stewart from “Twilight”. Well, how can you build such a dull grimace on emotions when you say goodbye to your daughter, perhaps for the last time, and she says she hates you. And then, when she was so small and stupid, she understood everything, to rejoice in it only as if you had bought the fifth iPhone. Okay. Let che.
Separately, I note Jason Azex. Exactly this actor played his character as it was necessary. In purely English aristocratic style. Bravo.
In general, the film is definitely not bad. And he could even count on the palm tree the best films about the history of the civil war, if not for one “but” - this story is not enough there. And if you do not know the story and watch the movie just for the sake of drama and emotions, then you will get maximum pleasure from the movie. And so only 7. Two points minus for the distortion of the story, for such a folk-history, and minus one point for Mel Gibson, a little bit wrong.
